Row four fills up first every single week. Nobody has been able to tell me what is wrong with row three.
Tuesday, 19:00What we do on Tuesdays
We gather at seven. Nobody has ever explained why seven and I have stopped asking.
Someone reads aloud. Last week it was the parking rules for the building. Everyone listened.
The candles are lit in order of height. Settling that order took four months and cost us two members.
I sit at the front. I am not permitted to sit anywhere else. I have tested this.
At the end they say my name all at once. It is the loudest thing that happens in my week.
Then everyone goes home, and on Wednesday they text me to confirm next Tuesday.
They have all seen me up close
Nine hundred people have knelt in front of this face. Not one of them backed out afterwards. I keep expecting somebody to stand up and say something.
Nobody ever does. That is the part I find hardest to explain.
